About Interpreting Robot Gestures

Grown-ups tell children not to point because it is rude. True enough, but pointing is also surprisingly sophisticated. Ask the primates: chimpanzees raised around people point far more, and a little differently, than those in the wild, apparently because they picked it up from us. Perhaps that is why so many of the AZR-0 robots are drawn mid-gesture, their signals looking so much like our own. In the story we built around them, the robots may simply have copied the scientist who spent her days watching them. Or perhaps we are all just missing the point.
