The fish sticks sold by Oberpfaffendorfer in the early 1900s were very different from the breaded delight that we know today. Back then there was no breadcrumb crust, no uniform molded shape. Just salted and spiced fish frozen onto a stick, ready to grill. But they were sure popular.

By the time the fish sticks we enjoy today appeared in the 1950s, Oberpfaffendorfer was ready to revive the Neptune Nibbles brand and its popular mermaid.

This reproduction of the original 1912 “Neptune Nibbles” ad for Oberpfaffendorfer’s fish sticks is part of a rare giclée print edition.

Each print carries an official Curio & Co. stamp and comes with an embossed Certificate of Authenticity. For more information on product materials, click here.

Looking at the ad, it makes sense that mermaids would be in great shape. They swim all day long – an activity doctors are always telling us is so good for us – and they eat a healthy diet of… plankton? Seaweed? Fish sticks seem as likely as anything.
